If you’ve met me, you’ll know I’m a big what-if kind of guy.
Over the course of the next few weeks, I’ll be conducting a series called “They Should’ve Been a Dynasty,” exploring teams from different sports over the past 15-20 years that I believe should have won more than they did.
Lots of small what-ifs lead to teams we thought would become perennial winners only being one hit wonders. In a macro sense, there’s lots of teams that only won once, but were never able to do it again, and then everything fizzled out.
Before I begin, lets clarify what I see as a dynasty: a team that has won at least three championships in a 10-year window. It can be a smaller window (i.e. a three-peat), but I think the simplest barometer is winning three championships within a certain window of time, showing that you were the best of your sport, and you showed it repeatedly (for example, the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014 to 2018 are not a dynasty in my eyes).
I’ll also put the range in which I think the team should’ve won, taking into account key players that where there that may have left, or windows in which they were close during a 10-year window, but did not win enough. Most teams I mention won a championship at least once, and all teams made it to the championship round of their sport.
Here’s the schedule for when to expect each sport to be covered (I only focused on the four major sports leagues in the United States; certainly more heartbreak if I widened the scope of this series):
April 24: NBA
May 1: NFL
May 8: MLB
May 15: NHL
Get your popcorn ready, and be careful, as you enjoy the misery of one franchise’s failures, just know your team could be around the corner, leaving you wondering where it all went wrong.
